Club Universitario de Deportes, more commonly known as simply Universitario, is a Peruvian professional sports club based in Lima, Peru. The club competes in Liga 1, the highest tier of Peruvian football, and is one of the country's most successful and historically significant teams. The club's simple emblem consists of a large burgundy letter "U" centered within a cream-colored circle outlined in a thick burgundy border. The letter "U" stands for "Universitario" and represents the club's academic origins, as well as pride, tradition, and unity among its students and players. The club was founded on August 7, 1924, by students and teachers of the National University of San Marcos under the name Federación Universitaria. In 1931, after university authorities asked the club to stop using the university's name, it adopted the name Club Universitario de Deportes while retaining the symbolic "U" to honor its academic roots.
