The flag of Turkey (Turkish: Türk Bayrağı) is a red flag with a white crescent and star in its center. The present design of the Turkish flag is almost the same as the Ottoman flag, adopted at the end of the 18th century. The crescent and star represent Islam. The red color symbolizes the blood and courage of those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country. The height-to-width ratio of the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted in 1844.
In addition, the flag used by the President includes 16 stars, which are thought to symbolize the 16 great Turkish states established throughout history, and a sun symbolizing eternity.
