The national flag of Afghanistan (Pashto: د افغانستان بیرغ; Dari: پرچم افغانستان) consists of three vertical black, red, and green bands with a centered national emblem. The black color represents its troubled 19th-century history. The red color symbolizes the blood of those who fought for independence. The green color represents hope and prosperity for the future (and Islam). Inscribed in the upper-middle part of the emblem is an excerpt from the Qur’an, which means "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammad is his prophet". Below are the rising sun and the words "Allah is Great". The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the current version of the flag was adopted in 2013.
The national emblem, which symbolizes Islam, has wheat ears around it, a mosque in the middle, national flags on either side of the mosque, and the inscription of the shahada on the top.
