The flag of the United Arab Emirates (Arabic: علم دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة) consists of three green, white, and black horizontal bands with a vertical red stripe on the left. According to a 13th-century poem, the colors in the flag express "the green Arab regions where the Arabs, whose actions are pure white, are defended by blood-red swords in black wars." The height-to-width ratio in the UAE flag is 1:2, and the flag was adopted on December 2, 1971.
Its emblem consists of a golden Quraysh hawk with a round UAE flag on its chest. Around the flag are seven stars, representing the seven emirates of the country, and the hawk holds a red scroll with the Arabic name of the country in its claws.
