The US flag, often referred to as the American flag, is the national flag of the United States of America. The US flag consists of 13 white and red lines with 50 white stars in the blue canton. The 50 stars in the blue canton represent the 50 states of the United States. Thirteen red-white lines represent the thirteen British colonies that became the first states in the United States. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 10:19, and the current 50-star version of the flag was adopted on July 4, 1960.

Its coat of arms features the country's national bird, the bald eagle. The shield on the eagle's chest has thirteen red and white stripes representing the thirteen original states, below the blue band representing the President and Congress. Also, the thirteen stars and thirteen arrows refer to the original thirteen states. The olive branch and arrows held by the eagle in its claws symbolize the power of peace and war. The parchment held by the eagle in its beak contains a Latin slogan (English: "one from many" or "one from many parts"), referring to the unification of the thirteen states into one nation.
