Flag of Tuscany (GIF)

The flag of Tuscany (Italian: Bandiera della Toscana), characterized by its distinctive design, features a silver Pegasus, a winged horse, positioned at the center of a pristine white field, flanked by two horizontal red bands. The utilization of the colors red and white to represent the Tuscan region dates back to at least the year 969, during the reign of Hugh, Margrave of Tuscany, reflecting the historical significance and deep-rooted tradition of the region. The image of the Pegasus on the flag finds its origins in a coin crafted by the renowned Florentine artist Benvenuto Cellini in 1537, created to honor Cardinal Pietro Bembo. Bembo, instrumental in the development of the Tuscan language as a literary medium, was celebrated with the representation of Pegasus, symbolizing creativity and inspiration. Consequently, the Pegasus became firmly entrenched as a symbol emblematic of the cultural heritage and artistic spirit of the Tuscan region, embodying its rich historical legacy and enduring connection to the arts.
