The flag of the Ivory Coast (French: drapeau de la Côte d'Ivoire) consists of three equal vertical stripes: orange, white, and green. The orange color represents the North Savannas. White symbolizes peace, purity, and the unity of hearts. Green represents hope for the future and recalls the fertile virgin forest of the Ivory Coast. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on December 3, 1959.
On the green shield on its coat of arms is the head of an elephant, the largest animal in the country and the source of the ivory that gives the country its name. At the top of the shield is a rising sun, symbolizing a new beginning, and two golden palm trees on either side of the shield.
