The flag of Malawi (Chichewa: mbendera ya Malaŵi) consists of black, red, and green horizontal bands with a red sun rising over the black band. The rising sun represents the dawn of hope and freedom for the African continent. The black color represents the indigenous peoples of the continent, the red symbolizes the blood of their struggle, and the green represents nature. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on July 6, 1964.
The shield on its coat of arms shows a lion of England, wavy lines symbolizing Lake Malawi, and a rising sun, symbolizing the rise of a new nation. At the top of the helmet at the top of the shield, is a sea eagle. The shield is supported by the country's top predators, a lion and a leopard, on the Mulanje mountain range, the highest point in the country.
