The flag of Somaliland (Somali: Calanka Soomaaliland; Arabic: علم أرض الصومال) consists of three horizontal stripes: green, white, and red. There is a white Arabic inscription in the middle of the green stripe: "La Ilaha Illallah, Muhammad Rasulullah" ("There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"), and there is a black star in the middle of the white stripe. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 1:2, and the flag was adopted on October 14, 1996.
In its emblem, the eagle of Saladin holds a scale symbolizing justice above its head. The hands shaking under the eagle symbolize equality and freedom, and the olive branches surrounding the emblem symbolize peace. The Islamic calligraphy above the scale reads "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim," which when translated into English means "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious and Merciful."
