The flag of Abkhazia (Аҧсны абыраҟ) consists of seven horizontal lines of green and white. In the center of the red canton, there is an open white hand and seven white five-pointed stars in a semi-circular pattern on the hand. The design of the red canton is based on the banner of the medieval Kingdom of Abkhazia. The open right hand means "Hello to friends!" "Stop the enemies!" The seven white stars in the canton represent the seven historical regions of the country. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 1:2, and the flag was adopted on July 23, 1992.
The shield on its coat of arms features a heroic epic scene from Narts: a horseman appears flying on a magnificent horse named Arash and shooting arrows at the stars. Also, green symbolizes life, white represents spirituality, and the stars represent the sun and the union of East and West.
