Flag of Abkhazia (GIF)

The flag of Abkhazia (Аҧсны абыраҟ) is characterized by seven horizontal stripes alternating between green and white. The red canton in the upper left corner features an open right hand, along with seven white five-pointed stars arranged in a semi-circular pattern above the hand. The design of the red canton is inspired by the historic banner of the medieval Kingdom of Abkhazia. The open hand symbolizes a welcoming gesture to friends and a deterrent to enemies ("Hello to friends! Stop to Enemies!"), while the seven stars are interpreted as representing the seven historical regions of the country (Sadzen, Bzyp, Gumaa, Abzhywa, Samurzaqan, Dal-Tsabal, and Pskhuy-Aibga). Also, the number 7 holds particular significance in Abkhazian culture, while the green and white stripes represent the harmonious coexistence of Christianity and Islam within the region, signifying tolerance and unity. This flag serves as a powerful emblem of Abkhazian heritage, resilience, and the enduring spirit of its people.

The coat of arms of Abkhazia on a waving white flag
The coat of arms of Abkhazia prominently showcases a captivating depiction from the Narts heroic epic, portraying a horseman soaring on the magnificent steed Arash, shooting arrows at the stars. This depiction not only reflects the rich cultural heritage of Abkhazia but also embodies the spirit of valor and resilience intrinsic to its history. The green color in the coat of arms signifies life, growth, and the fertile nature of the land, while the white color represents spirituality and purity. The stars symbolize the sun and serve as a testament to the unity between the East and the West. Together, these elements encapsulate the essence of Abkhazian identity, history, and the enduring spirit of its people.
