The flag of Spain (Spanish: Bandera de España) consists of three horizontal stripes, red, yellow, and red. Yellow and red are known as traditional Spanish colors. On the left side of the center of the yellow stripe, which is twice the height of the red stripe, there is a national coat of arms of Spain. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the current version of the flag was adopted on October 5, 1981.
Its coat of arms consists of the Spanish Royal Crown, the Imperial Crown, the coats of arms of the former kingdoms of Spain (Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre, and Granada), the coat of arms of the House of Bourbon, the Pillars of Hercules, symbolizing the Strait of Gibraltar, and a Spanish national motto meaning "Further Beyond."
