The national flag of Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Türkmenistanyň baýdagy) is a green flag with a red rug pattern on the left and a white crescent and five stars on the top right of the pattern. The rug pattern is a symbolic representation of the country's famous carpet industry, and the five shapes in the pattern represent the five great Turkmen tribes. While the crescent symbolizes Islam and the country's hope for a bright future, the stars represent the country's five regions. The height-to-width ratio on the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on February 19, 1992.
The octagonal structure of its emblem is known as Rub al-Hizb and is one of the symbols of Islam. At the center of the emblem is an Akhal-Teke horse, the pride of the Turkmen people. The red rug pattern, symbolizing the five Turkmen tribes, is surrounded by ears of wheat, which refers to the claim that the origin of white wheat is Turkmenistan.
