The flag of Uganda (Swahili: Bendera ya Uganda) consists of six equal horizontal black, yellow, and red stripes. A white disc in the center shows the national symbol, a gray-crowned crane bird facing left. Black, yellow, and red colors represent African peoples, African sunshine, and African brotherhood, respectively. Red also symbolizes the color of the blood that connects all Africans. The gray-crowned crane bird was the military badge of Ugandan soldiers during British domination, and the raised foot of the crane bird symbolizes the forward movement of the country. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on October 9, 1962.
The shield and spears on its coat of arms symbolize the defense of the country; the wavy lines on the shield symbolize Lakes Victoria and Albert; the sun represents the sunny, bright days of the country; and the drum dance and the invitation of people to meetings and ceremonies. To the right of the shield is the national bird of the country, the crowned gray crane, and to the left of the shield is an antelope, representing the country's wildlife. On a mound symbolizing the country's fertile lands, there is a representation of the Nile river, and next to it are two important agricultural products of the country: coffee and cotton.
