The national flag of Belgium (Dutch: vlag van België, French: drapeau de la Belgique, German: Flagge Belgiens) is a tricolor flag consisting of three vertical stripes of black (left), yellow and red. The colors are taken from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant. The black color represents the shield, the yellow color symbolizes the lion, and the red color represents the lion's claws and tongue. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 13:15, and the flag was adopted on January 23, 1831.
Also on the coat of arms are the royal crown, the flags of the nine provinces that make up Belgium, the French motto "Unity is Strength," and two lions supporting a shield with the Belgian Lion on it.
