The national flag of the Republic of Chad (French: Drapeau du Tchad; Arabic: علم تشاد) is a tricolor flag consisting of vertical stripes of blue, gold and red. The design and colors are almost the same as the Romanian flag. The blue color represents the sky and hope, the yellow color symbolizes the sun and the desert, and the red color depicts the spilled blood for independence. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on November 6, 1959.
In its coat of arms, there are zigzag lines symbolizing Lake Chad on the shield, a rising sun symbolizing a new beginning, a goat representing the northern part of the state, and a lion representing the southern part. Below the shield are the National Order of Chad and the French motto "Unité, Travail, Progrès", meaning "Unity, Work, Progress".
