Flag of Massachusetts (GIF)

The Massachusetts flag consists of a state coat of arms centered on a white field. The flag usually symbolizes peace and freedom. The shield shows an Algonquian Native American with an arrow and bow. The arrow pointing downward symbolizes peace. The star represents Massachusetts' admission as the sixth US state. Above the shield is the state military crest: the bent arm holding a sword aloft represents liberty. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 3:5, and the flag was adopted on March 21, 1971.

Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is the most populous state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. Its capital is Boston; its population is approximately 6.985 million (2021); and its area is 10,554 mi².
