The national flag of the Philippines (Tagalog: Pambansang watawat ng Pilipinas; Ilocano: Nailian a bandera ti Filipinas; Cebuano: Nasudnong bandila ng Pilipinas; Spanish: Bandera Nacional de Filipinas) consists of two equal horizontal blue and red bands and a white triangle on the left. At the center of the triangle is a golden-yellow sun with eight beams, each representing a Philippine region. Each corner of the triangle has a five-pointed golden star, each of which represents one of the country's three main island groups.
The white equilateral triangle symbolizes freedom, equality, and brotherhood. The horizontal blue stripe represents peace, truth, and justice, and the horizontal red stripe expresses patriotism and bravery. The golden sun symbolizes unity, freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 1:2, and the current version of the flag was adopted on February 12, 1998.
Also on its coat of arms are the North American bald eagle of the United States and the lion of the Kingdom of Leon of Spain, both symbolizing the country's colonial history.
