Mari El Flag GIF (Флаг Марий Эл гифка)
The Mari El flag (Russian: Флаг Марий Эл) is a white flag with a patterned red vertical stripe on the left. The state coat of arms in the middle of the flag contains a bear holding a sword and a heraldic shield. The bear is the symbol of the region, and the crown symbolizes the nation. The sword represents the power and willingness to defend the republic. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 2:3, and the flag was adopted on June 1, 2011. Mari El is a federal region (republic) of Russia. Its capital is Yoshkar-Ola; its population is about 696,459 (2010); and its area is 23,200 km².
