The flag of Neuchâtel (German: Flagge von Neuenburg; French: Drapeau de Neuchâtel) is composed of three vertical stripes in green, white, and red, with a white cross positioned in the upper right corner of the red stripe. Various theories have emerged regarding the symbolism of the flag's design. One interpretation suggests that the flag was originally adopted in the mid-19th century by the republican and revolutionary parties, either as a direct emulation of the Italian republican and independentist movement or as a representation of revolution (green and white) and loyalty to Switzerland (red with white cross). Another theory proposes that the colors were inspired by the national colors of the herald of Neuchâtel, with green and white representing rebellion and red and white symbolizing the Swiss flag, while the cross was added in 1870 to differentiate it from the Italian flag. A third theory suggests that the flag was created hurriedly after the "Revolution of the 1st March 1848," with the red symbolizing the wine-producing southern region, white representing the valleys with their white walls, and green standing for the pastures and forests in the northern part of the Canton.
