Flag of Zurich (GIF)

The Zurich flag (German: Flagge Zürich; French: Drapeau de Zurich) is a square flag consisting of two equal triangles in sky blue and white. The height-to-width ratio of the flag is 1:1. The Zurich flag was based on a blue-white design adopted in the 1220s, and the cross-design of the flag was first approved in 1389. As in the flag of Lucerne, the blue color represents lakes, and the white color symbolizes the snow-capped mountains over the lakes. Zurich is a canton in the northeast of Switzerland. Its capital is Zurich; its population is about 1.521 million (2019); and its area is 1,729 km².
