Flag of Basel-City (GIF)
The flag of Basel-City (German: Flagge von Basel-Stadt; French: Drapeau de Bâle-Ville) is a square white flag with a black wand in the middle. The peculiar heraldic shape of the wand dates back to the 13th century when it was used by the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. The bishop's wand has had three meanings since early Christianity: support or guidance, authority, and control emblem, and punishment and correction instrument. Basel City is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland. Its capital is Basel; its population is approximately 194,766 (2019); and its area is 37 km².
