The Hesse flag (German: Flagge Hessens) consists of two horizontally equal red (white) and white stripes. In the middle of the state flag is a shield-shaped coat of arms. There is a red and white striped lion on the shield and a crown of gold leaves on top of it. Both flags have a height-to-width ratio of 3:5, and both were adopted in 1948. Hesse is a federal state of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its capital is Wiesbaden, its population is approximately 6.266 million (2019), and its area is 21,115 km².
