The civil flag of Thuringia (German: Landesflagge) |
The flag of Thuringia (German: Flagge Thüringens) is a horizontal, bicolored flag with white on the top and red on the bottom. The colors of the flag reflect the heraldic colors of the Ludovingian rulers. The height-to-width ratio in the flag is 3:5, and the flag was adopted in 1921. Also, there is a coat of arms in the middle of the state flag. The state coat of arms consists of a blue shield with eight white stars on it and a lion made of eight horizontal red and white lines with a golden crown and claws on the shield. The stars represent the eight former states of Thuringia. Thuringia is a federal state in Germany. Its capital is Erfurt; its population is about 2.143 million (2019); and its area is 16,172 km².
