Flag of Vaud (GIF)
The Vaud flag (German: Flagge von Waadt; French: Drapeau de Vaud) is a two-color square flag with two horizontal white and green stripes separated by a black line. On the white stripe is a slogan written in French that means freedom and homeland: "Liberté et Patrie." Green and white are the colors of the revolution, and in the 1790s, they were used on the first flag of the Vaudois rebellion. Vaud is the third-most populous canton in the Swiss cantons. Its capital is Lausanne; its population is about 799,145 (2019); and its area is 3,212 km².
